The CPT Editorial Board does not work in a vacuum; it receives input from professionals in more than 100 medical societies. But the AMA acknowledges that the changes are intended to increase transparency and fairness. The changes include:
* More opportunities for face-to-face meetings to encourage more participation beyond the CPT Editorial Panel and CPT Advisory Committee;
* Better identification of organizations that may be affected by a coding change and making more information available, as well as proactive communication with individuals and organizations that request a code change about the direction of an application prior to consideration by the editorial board;
* Creation of an independent medical advisor to assist CPT staff on process issues and assist applicants seeking coding changes but unfamiliar with the process; and
* Permitting applicants to see recommendations made by the Molecular Pathology Advisory Group to the Pathology Coding Caucus prior to caucus consideration.
